Definition

A hierarchical breakdown of a project's scope into manageable deliverables, work packages, activities, and tasks.

What it means on a project

The practical reading, without treating one region's contract language as universal.

A WBS gives schedules, costs, responsibilities, progress, inspections, and reporting a common structure.

It describes the work that must be delivered; sequencing and dates are normally developed in the project schedule.

Terminology, contractual effect, and regulatory requirements vary by jurisdiction and contract. Confirm the definition used on your project before relying on this glossary entry.
