Definition
A formal construction document used to request clarification when drawings, specifications, site conditions, or instructions are unclear or conflicting.
What it means on a project
The practical reading, without treating one region's contract language as universal.
An RFI creates a traceable question-and-response record. It should identify the exact information gap, cite the relevant contract documents, and state when an answer is needed.
An RFI is not automatic approval for additional cost or time. Any resulting change should follow the project's change-control process.
