Folders & Navigation

Create, rename and delete folders, and move around the library with the rail, the file list and the folder path.

Folders are the only structure the library has, so they carry the weight: a file is found by opening the folder it was filed into. Build the structure the way your project already files paperwork — by discipline, by block, by document type.

Overview

On a wide screen the rail on the left holds the whole structure: All Documents at the top, then General — the library root — with your folder tree beneath it. A folder with subfolders has a chevron to expand it. Clicking a folder name selects it, and the panel on the right lists that folder's subfolders (alphabetically) above its files.

Folder management lives on the rail's Options menu

Creating a Folder

There are two ways in, and they differ only in where the new folder lands.

1

Choose where it goes

Click New Folder in the toolbar to create a folder inside whatever you are looking at — at the root if you are on General, or inside the open folder if you have one selected.

Or open a folder's Options () menu in the rail and choose New subfolder to create it inside that folder specifically. The parent expands so you can see the new folder.

2

Name it

Type a Folder name — up to 200 characters — and press Enter or click Create. The name is required; Create stays disabled until you type one.

One field, then Create

Names are not checked for duplicates

Two folders in the same place can carry the same name, and nothing warns you. Keep sibling names distinct so the tree stays readable.

The New Folder button only appears when you are in General or in a folder. In All Documents there is nowhere for a new folder to go, so the button is not shown — select General first.

Renaming a Folder

Open the folder's Options () menu in the rail and choose Rename. The Rename Folder dialog opens with the current name filled in; change it and click Rename. Nothing inside the folder moves or changes.

Deleting a Folder

Open the folder's Options () menu in the rail, choose Delete, and confirm in Delete folder?.

The folder and all of its subfolders are removed. The files are not deleted — every file in that folder and its subfolders moves back to General, the library root, where you can still find them. If you were looking at the folder you deleted, the view drops back to General.

Deleting a folder keeps the files — they move to the root

Finding Your Way Around

  • The rail — click a folder name to select it; click the chevron to expand or collapse it without moving. The toggle beside the folder path hides the rail when you want the full width for the list.
  • The list — subfolder rows sit above the file rows and are labelled Folder. Click one to go into it.
  • The folder path — the trail across the top, Documents › General › Structural › Drawings. Every step except the last is a button, so it is the quickest way back up.
  • All Documents — filed documents listed together, without folders. Useful when you know the file exists but not where it went.

There is no search, no filter and no sort. There is also no way to move or rename a file once it is uploaded, so the folder you upload into is the folder it stays in — worth a moment's thought before a big upload.
