A request for inspection exists to protect a hold or witness point: once concrete is poured or a service is closed in, the chance to inspect it is gone. State the exact location, element, and ITP reference, confirm the contractor's own pre-inspection is complete, and give the inspector a realistic date and time — most consultants need real notice, not a same-hour call.
Reference the inspection and test plan by number so the reviewer knows which checklist governs the point, and list the drawing and specification clauses the work must match. Questions
Is a request for inspection the same as a request for information (RFI)?
No, although many sites use "RFI" for both. A request for information asks a designer or consultant a question about the design. A request for inspection asks the consultant or client's inspector to check completed work — often at a hold or witness point — before it is covered up or the next activity starts. For the question-and-answer form, use the separate RFI builder.
What is the difference between a hold point and a witness point?
A hold point stops work completely until the inspector attends and gives approval — for example, reinforcement before a pour. A witness point lets work continue if the inspector doesn't attend by an agreed time, but the inspector must still be given the opportunity to attend. The inspection and test plan should state which type applies to each activity.
What makes a request for inspection acceptable to the inspector?
One that gives enough notice, cites the correct ITP reference and drawing revision, confirms the contractor's own pre-inspection is complete, and states the exact location and element. A vague or last-minute request is the most common reason an inspection gets delayed or refused.
